Kids are inside with babysitter and I’m in the studio tackling the insanity that resulted from the work of the last couple of months. I will post the after pictures – hopefully in not more than a couple of hours…
This was the studio just before going to TO. Tomorrow is my first day back to work – guess what comes first? (hint – CLEAN UP!)
Ah, flying across the country with 2 kids under the age of 3. That’s all I’m going to say about that.
So it’s great to be back and the whole experience was worth the gargantuan effort and expense. Now I can go back into my studio with the knowledge that my new work won’t be piling up in storage!
It’s late but I have to write one little anecdote from the show before I forget. A man came by and saw the beaver portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. He told me this story:
I used to be a bell man at the Lord Beaverbrook Hotel and the Queen came and stayed while I worked there. She had staff assigned to her and though it was a big no no, one of them let me into her suite so that I could have a look. We looked into the Royal Powder Room, and I swear to god, the toilet seat was lined… in MINK FUR.
Isn’t that awesome??
Here are a couple of pictures from the show. There is a full album that you can see in the gallery. All pics are by my better half, Brick Blair.
Well we lived with her for about three years in our living room and now she has gone to her new home in Toronto. From a rock wall in a log home to a sophisticated salon complete with a grand piano! So fitting for her somehow. Thank you to my new collectors and I hope you enjoy her as much as we have!
Here is a before and after:
Just like that – three days and it’s over. I sold three, won an award, and will have three on consignment with Galerie Division. It was a lot of work but it’s done and now the work continues, first in Toronto to try and nail down representation here and then in the studio back home. I’m typing this on my phone because my 3 year old won’t let me on the computer (watching remote control jeeps on YouTube) and my baby is sleeping briefly – life is back to normal!
I just realized my cv isn’t on my new site here – I will try to wrestle the computer back and get that up.

The show is crazy. Nine hours a day of non-stop talking to the river of people flowing through. It was a great day though – I sold a piece to a very nice man and had 3 other pieces taken by Gallerie Division in Montreal. The exposure is phenomenal and again I am blown away by the ability of the work to appeal to such a broad spectrum of people on a variety of different levels. Yes, some people don’t get far enough to fully understand the context but that is true of all art. So one more day and I hope it will be as gratifying as yesterday. And Oh – how could I forget – I won an award with the prize generously donated by the David Kaye gallery here in Toronto! So there you go, as Brick put it “Marianne Corless, recognized by the jury of the prestigious Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, now in its 47th year”. He has such a way with words.
It was tough yesterday in the rain – no doubt about it. But it didn’t last all day and people still came out so it ended well. I haven’t showed the fur work in awhile and it reminded me of the impact of the work. The hauling of the work in and out of the show is BRUTAL. Brick is amazing with it and the kids do their best but it’s a serious pain. But today – some childcare during those times will help a lot.
So for anyone in TO, here is the information for the show. Please COME ON DOWN!
The show is in Nathan Phillips Square, at the corner of Queen St. W and Bay. In front of City Hall.
Times are: Friday 10:30 – 7:30, Saturday 10:30 – 7:30 and Sunday 10:30 – 6:30
My booth is #583, which is in the Turquoise section. I think I’m pretty close to the info booth.
I will have 12 works there for sale, 8 historical fur portraits and 4 mink fur portraits. Check them out in my gallery.
